“If you type faster than you think, your hand and mind are not in sync. “You can produce on a computer keyboard very fast,” says Gish. “I sometimes have students come into my office and I sit them down and say, ‘Okay, read that sentence that you wrote.’ Last spring, a student was halfway through her own sentence and looked at me and said, ‘This doesn’t make any sense.’ I said, ‘Yes, I know.’” Primarily, she points to the pitfalls of composing on a computer. In addition to increasing the amount of time you spend reading and practicing your writing, Gish recommends ways to improve your writing right now.

In case you’re not one of the privileged 15 students who make it into the course each semester, do not feel hopeless. “If syntax is the way we make meaning,” explains Gish, “then it’s the most important component, and unfortunately, it’s the one that is never taught.” Upon completion of the course, students say they wish they’d known these things from the beginning. Everything on the page is as symbolic as a word: a comma, a semi-colon, a white space, a capital. Then all the patterns on a page of writing become, in Gish’s words, like director’s cues or musician’s notes. The so-called “rules” are integrated in what they write. Instead, Gish instructs her students to think about the relationship of the sentence parts intellectually, theoretically, and then generate their own “correct” sentences. According to Gish, that kind of teaching starts on the wrong end and is, in fact, boring.

“Grammar used to be taught in a way that took a fascinating thing and made it boring.” Students were given sentences written by someone else in an exercise manual or on a chalkboard, and then asked to correct or fix them. Students plead with me to get in they are dying to know it.” Gish is right, judging by the line of students waiting to get into the course, which focuses on sentence-level writing, including grammar. If you think learning about grammar is boring, you’ve obviously never taken USM Professor of English Nancy Gish’s course, “Rhetoric, Syntax and Style.” Nancy Gish is one of the most passionate, outspoken people you’ll ever meet. It may be worth considering as a 1st level feat.By Amanda Pleau, USM Office of Public Affairs Intern It doesn't cost any more actions than Flurry of Blows (it allows you to make a flurry as part of the action to cast it), so you can True Strike + Ki Flurry and still have an action left. You get 1/combat (assuming you have 10 minutes between combats to meditate), and it gives you a huge increase to damage. Ki Strike works really well with a build like this. True strike is still a fantastic level 1 spell from the wizard dedication though. Magic Weapon doesn't technically work on unarmed strikes you'd want Magic Fang, a primal spell, for that. You'll still need basic arcana to qualify for advanced arcana, but you can get a Familiar, a metamagic feat, or Counterspell instead.

You can provide material components for your spells with a single free hand, and most spells don't have material components anyway. Of note, staves are 1 handed weapons in PF2E. How's that not great role play opportunity?Įschew Materials only really helps you if you're using a two handed weapon. You get to role play and ancient elven monk wizard.

The combination of higher cast invisibility and mirror image means reliable ways to keep yourself in the fight while proccing bespell weapon. Fob damage gets added together to overcome resistance's.

Thankfully monks have awesome action economy with fob. Only real way I've seen damage increase for Gish in 2e is bespell weapon. Spells: true strike/magic weapon/invisibility/mirror imageīasic idea is you true strike- flurry of blows. With monastic weaponry I like stand still and tangled Forest stance synergy but isn't necessary. Ancient elf monk with wizard dedication (sorcerer could work too)ġ- monastic weaponry or dragon style so you can easily use a divination staff later.ġ4 and 16 sorta just depends on what your looking for.
